Accused CEO Shooter Luigi Mangione Graduated From Ivy League College With Master’s & BA, Comes From Wealthy Maryland Real Estate Family

Luigi Mangionewho was charged in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Monday, has been identified as a native of Maryland and a University of Pennsylvania graduate. Mangione was born and raised in Maryland in a wealthy Baltimore family.

According to New York Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, Mangione also has ties to San Francisco, California. He had no previous arrests in New York, where the murder took place, and his former address was in Honolulu, Hawaii, police stated.

According to school officials, the shooting suspect attended a private, all-boys high school in Baltimore, the Gilman School. Mangione was named the valedictorian of his class, the student with the highest academic achievements.

A former classmate, Freddie Leatherbury, told reporters that Mangione came from a wealthy family, even by the private school’s standards. “Quite honestly, he had everything going for him,” Leatherbury told the outlet.

An anonymous former classmate who described themselves as a friend of Mangione told CBS News that the shooting suspect was a “nice” and “smart” person.

“I wouldn’t characterize him as introverted or extroverted,” the former classmate added. “He didn’t have any enemies. He was our valedictorian for a reason.”

Mangione graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science and founded a video game development club.

His social media profiles reveal that he was a data engineer for TrueCar, a digital retailing website for new and used cars. A company spokesman said he had only worked there in 2023.

The suspect’s LinkedIn profile mentioned that he used to work as a programming intern for Firaxis, a video game developer.

He also spent some time in a co-living surfing community in Hawaii called Surfbreak. Sarah Nehemiah, who knew him then, told CBS that he left due to his back injury, worsened by surfing and hiking.
