Abigail Breslin has shared a strong message with an online commenter who says that unreported rapes don’t “count” – says Breslin, “Unreported rapes count. Reported rapes count. End of story.”

After posting an info graphic about the number of rapists who are incarcerated for their crime, Breslin noticed a comment that said, “reported rapes are the only rapes that count.” Breslin decided to respond to the comment in a separate post, in which she admitted that she had been raped herself.

“I did not report my rape. I did not report it for many reasons,” Breslin’s post began.

The Little Miss Sunshine actor then went on to list three big reasons why she never reported the crime.

“First off, I was in complete shock and total denial. I didn’t want to view myself as the ‘victim’ so I suppressed it and pretended it never happened,” she wrote.

The second reason, Breslin explains, is that she was in a relationship with her rapist. Because of this, she worried that others wouldn’t believe her.

“I also feared that if my case didn’t lead anywhere, he would still find out and hurt me even more.”

Breslin also worried she would upset her friends and family. “Thirdly, I knew how hurt my family and friends would be after finding out and I didn’t want to put them thru that,” Breslin wrote.

After explaining the reasons why she did not report the rape to law enforcement, Breslin then revealed a little more about how the assault has affected her – although she said, “I knew my assailant,” two weeks earlier in a separate post, this was the first time Breslin opened up about specific details in public.

“I was diagnosed with PTSD a year and a half ago. I have made a lot of progress since the event occurred, but I won’t pretend it isn’t something I struggle with,” she wrote. “I still have flashbacks, I still get nightmares, I still jump when someone touches me unexpectedly, even if it’s my best friend tapping me on the shoulder.”

The Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network created the original info graphic Breslin shared. The statistic at the top of the page reads, “Out of every 1,000 rapes, 994 perpetrators will walk free.”
