This is the first Christmas that actress Abigail Breslin is spending without her father, since Michael Breslin died of Covid-19 in February. The 25-year-old actress took to Instagram on Friday to explain her feelings.

“Merry Christmas eve everyone!” she began the message. “I’m not gonna lie. This one is a weird one for me. My first holiday season sans my dada.”

Her father died less than three weeks after contracting the virus. He was 78 years old.

At the time, Abigail posted photographs of her father and stated on social media that she was “in shock and devastation” that her “sweet, perfect, amazing, heroic, wonderful dada passed away after my family and I said goodbye.”

She expressed her continued grief in her Christmas post Friday. She added, “I love the holiday season and am so thankful I get to spend it with my mom, my brothers, my friends and my boyfriend… I’m truly blessed. But it’s hard to know I can’t call my daddy and wish him a merry Christmas or send him a gift certificate to a good steakhouse (lol).”

“Some days are harder than others,” she said. “Grief is a tricky monster.”

Breslin’s brothers, actors Ryan Breslin and Spencer Breslin, posted about their own grief at the time of Michael’s passing. Spencer wrote in February, “Death is the one thing we all have in common, but never expect. Love you, Dad. Forever and ever.”

Abigail echoed this sentiment in her Friday post. “I wish there was an expiration date to missing someone,” she said. “But I had almost 25 great years of having an awesome dad.”

To anyone who’s missing someone this holiday season,” she added, “I see you, I hear you and you’re not alone.”

She concluded the post, “Nonetheless, I’m going to heavily cherish those who are here and hug them harder than ever. Merry Christmas to all… and to all, a good night.”
