ABC News Anchor George Stephanopoulos Demands Same Size Dressing Room As Rival David Muir As Feud Bursts Into Public

New details have been revealed about the “historic tension” between ABC newsmen George Stephanopoulos, 63, and David Muir, 47, described in the past as a vehement “loathing” for one another.

In response to a question about Muir and Stephanopoulos’ relationship, senior media reporter for CNN Oliver Darcy revealed in a holiday edition of the Status newsletter, “There certainly has been historic tension – to put it lightly – between the two anchors.”

Muir and Stephanopoulos’ hatred for each other is reportedly due to Muir’s professional ascent to anchor at the network, which led to him replacing Stephanopoulos as Chief Anchor at ABC.

Furious at being replaced by the younger anchor, Stephanopoulos, who held the role since 2014, threatened to leave ABC if Muir was promoted. It took an intervention from Bob Iger in 2021 to convince him to stay with a valuable contract extension. Stephanopoulos presently makes $18 million a year and Muir has remained secure with his own long-term contract.

Darcy continued, “[such tension] has resulted in headaches for the networks’ bosses. But viewers may notice that, for the last few years, Stephanopoulos has been absent during politics-focused special coverage, such as Election Night. Those duties now fall squarely to David Muir.”

Competitors for years, the rivalry between Muir and Stephanopoulos was supposedly made all the worse when Joe Biden’s advisors picked Stephanopoulos to lead the first interview with Biden following his initial debate.

In September, The US Sun reported that the ABC anchors had switched studios due to Stephanopoulos’ complaints that Muir had a dressing space bigger than his. An insider explained, “George has been interested in making sure he gets whatever David Muir gets… He’s been asking people on his team to find out what David is getting to make sure his is comparable.”

ABC recently made a $15 million donation to a Trump charity after he incorrectly stated on air that the president-elect had been found guilty of rape.
