Abby Lee Miller
Former Dance Mom Abby Lee Miller has been sentenced to serve one year and one day in prison for bankruptcy fraud.
Miller was found guilty of bankruptcy fraud and bringing $120,000 worth of Australian currency into the country without reporting it. She also attempted to hide $775,000 of income from her Lifetime series and spin-off.
She was indicted in 2015 on 20 counts of fraud. She initially pleaded guilty. In addition, Miller was sentenced to two years of supervised release and fined $40,000, as well as ordered to pay a $120,000 judgment. “It is a very serious situation when someone who files for bankruptcy isn’t truthful with the court,” Chief Judge Joy Flowers Conti told the reality star. “You weren’t truthful, even when you knew you were supposed to tell everything, you still weren’t truthful. Somehow you got caught up in the world of fame and you lost your moral compass,” Conti added.
“I’m afraid of being physically abused or raped,” Miller, 51, told People last month. “I have to stay busy. If I thought about it every day, I’d just sit around and cry.” The maximum sentence she could have received was two and a half years in prison, so she got less than half that time. “It’s out of my hands,” she said while awaiting her sentencing. “I made mistakes and I trusted people, but ultimately I have to take responsibility.”
In March, the former Dance Moms star announced her resignation in an Instagram post. “I will no longer take part in Dance Moms,” she wrote angrily. “For the past six years/seven seasons I have asked, begged, and even demanded creative credit for all the ideas, award winning routines, themes and costuming – to no avail!”
The controversial announcement also claimed that her male producers were sexist and disrespectful of women. “I don’t have a problem working with any kid, I love children and have dedicated my life to making other people’s children successful,” she wrote. “I just have a problem with being manipulated, disrespected, and used – day in and day out by men who never took a dance lesson in their lives and treat women like dirt!”
