Angel Carter Conrad has given the public a glimpse of how she handled the deaths of her sister Leslie in 2012, her twin brother Aaron Carter in 2022, and her sister Bobbie Jean Carter one year ago.
Leslie and Bobbie Jean both died from drug overdoses, while Aaron accidentally drowned in the bathtub after he took Xanax and inhaled an excess amount of compressed air. All three deaths were attributed to issues with addiction.
In the wake of her siblings’ deaths, Conrad has become an avid supporter of the nonprofit group the Kids Mental Health Foundation, where she said she hopes to help other children learn how to manage their emotions, protect themselves and look forward to the future.
In an interview with People, the one-year anniversary of Bobbie Jean’s death, Conrad shared, “Within my grief, I have found a lot of peace and lot of hope working with the Kids Mental Health Foundation…volunteering my time, raising awareness, raising funds for this organization and just continuing the conversation about mental health and the stigma that surrounds it.”
Conrad also revealed that she has been educating herself on addiction in a quest to understand the “generational dysfunction” that has plagued her family.
She remembered, “A few years before Aaron passed away, he said to me something that really stuck with me, and he said, ‘Angel, you just don’t know enough about addiction.’ And it hit my heart, especially after he passed away because I don’t [know enough]…the last couple of years, I’ve just been really trying to educate myself about this disease and how it affects people and how it causes things that they do that they may not mean to do.”
Conrad emphasized the delicate approach she has taken to educating her five-year-old daughter about such diseases that exist in the world and persist among their family members.
“That wasn’t done in my home growing ups: providing a safe space for her to discipline and allowing her to have her innocence…I look back at Aaron’s life, and me and my sisters as well, and our innocence was taken away from us.”
Conrad emphasized how Aaron was essentially stripped of his childhood as a child star and said, “I think the most important thing is that my child is protected with her innocence, and she’s able to grow and learn and try new things and become the person that she wants to be one day.”
She explained, “Having so much loss in my life, I do know what to expect to a certain extent now, and I want to continue to honor my family. So in those moments on those anniversaries – Aaron and I just had a birthday, we turned 37 – and I really just try to be in peace and in that moment as much as I can and just honor them by talking to them and allowing them to still be present in my life.”
She emphasized that her daughter knows all about her deceased aunts and uncle and has regular playdates with Aaron’s three-year-old son, with whom she is very close.
