Don Lemon announced on Monday that he was fired from his role at CNN. The anchor broke the news on Twitter, stating that his agent informed him that he was being terminated.
Lemon wrote, “After 17 years at CNN I would have thought someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly.”
In a statement, CNN CEO Chris Licht said, “Don will forever be a part of the CNN family, and we thank him for his contributions over the past 17 years. We wish him well and will be cheering him on in his future endeavors.”
Lemon has worked for CNN since 2006, joining after serving as a correspondent for NBC News, the Today show and NBC Nightly News.
The news comes after he was heavily criticized for sexist remarks he made on-air in February when he commented that Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, 51, was not in her “prime.”
Lemon stated, “A woman is considered to be in her prime – in her 20s, 30s and maybe her 40s.” When he received pushback from co-anchor Poppy Harlow, Lemon said to not “shoot the messenger.”
Due to the backlash, Lemon agreed to undergo “formal training” before his return to CNN This Morning.
But Variety published an article earlier this month about allegations by several former and current colleagues that he had an extensive history of mistreating women at work.
Lemon’s spokesperson said in a statement that the story was “riddled with patently false anecdotes and no concrete evidence” and was both “unsourced” and “unsubstantiated.”
CNN told Variety that Lemon had denied the allegations and that it was unable to substantiate any of the claims.
