‘9 To 5’ In Talks For A Remake Starring Original Cast

The 1980 comedy classic 9 to 5 could become the next hit to get a remake.

9 TO 5 IN TALKS FOR REMAKE WITH ORIGINAL STARS

According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox wants Rashida Jones, 42, to co-write an updated version with original creator Pat Resnick. The film’s original stars – Dolly Parton, 71, Jane Fonda, 79, and Lily Tomlin, 78 – are reportedly on board to reprise their roles as the trio of ladies who turn on their bad boss, who was played by Dabney Coleman.

“All these years we’ve talked about doing a sequel to 9 to 5 and it never made any real sense until just recently,” Parton told ABC’s Nightline, referring to the current cultural atmosphere about equality and sexual harassment in the workplace. “We decided that we are going to do another one. We are trying to get the script and all that, everyone is very interested and we’ve all agreed that we’d love to do it if it’s right.”

Deadline says the remake would “focus on three young women dealing with sexism and chauvinism in the workplace, who turn to the original trio for help in navigating and getting even with the coarse male higher-ups.”

The studio believes that the Parks & Recreation alum would “make the concept relevant to a young comedy audience.” In the time of #MeToo and the Time’s Up movement, more women are raising awareness about the toxic environment of sexual assault across all industries.

Most recently, Parton, Fonda and Tomlin reunited at the Emmy Awards in 2017 where they presented the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie to Alexander Skarsgård for Big Little Lies.

“Well, thank you, that’s nice,” Parton said to the cheering crowd at the time. “Personally, I have been waiting for a 9 to 5 reunion ever since we did the first one.”

“Well back in 1980 in that movie, we refused to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot,” Fonda said. “And in 2017, we still refuse to be controlled by a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot,” Tomlin chimed in, with a knock at Donald Trump.
