’80s Actor Steve Guttenberg Becomes Surprise Hero Of Palisades Fire, Helping To Move Cars & Fight Flames
Earlier this week, actor Steve Guttenberg demonstrated his dedication to public service as he aided fire crew members battling a wildfire rapidly spreading across Southern California.
The ongoing L.A. wildfires have advanced from 20 acres to over 3,000 in the last week.
Of the areas the fire has torched, particularly affected is the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, located by Malibu and Santa Monica. The wealthy neighborhood houses multiple celebrities – including Guttenberg, 66, known for his role in the Police Academy movies, who has lived there for three decades.
Most celebrities have since left the premises, along with many other citizens. When an evacuation order was issued, many individuals deserted their cars in the middle of the streets out of fear, some leaving their keys behind.
Not Guttenberg however, whose property was notably damaged in the natural disaster. Despite the perilous conditions, he was seen with firefighters by his house helping to move cars from the streets to make room for an emergency vehicle.
On Tuesday, he told Entertainment Weekly, “Well, what happened was the fire got so close and everyone was trying to get out that it became sort of a little bit of a panic…I knew that we needed emergency vehicles through there…and I wasn’t the only one. But I started just moving cars.”
Guttenberg explained a personal responsibility to facilitate immediate positive change in one’s community and advised individuals to help when, and as much, as they can.
“In a crisis, always remember that you are, you’re part of a community…and if you’re able-bodied, you’ve got to help. You’ve got to help,” he said.
“You can’t walk by somebody when they need something. You just can’t walk by them. You have to help them. There are a lot of people who need help. Some people are so scared. Some people are in wheelchairs, some people are old or infirm, and you need to help them, you can’t just walk by.”
Guttenberg assured that he planned to return to help the crew members the following day.
