Musical Kinky Boots and Broadway revival Pippen led the 67th Annual Tony Awards, earning six trophies and four trophies, respectively, during the night hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.
Kicky Boots took home Tonys for best musical, leading actor Billy Porter, best composer 80s star Cyndi Lauper, choreography by Jerry Mitchell, John Shiver’s sound design and orchestrations led by Stephen Oremus. Meanwhile, Stephen Schwartz’s Pippen won for best revival, lead actress Patina Miller, featured actress Andrea Martin and best director Diane Paulu.
One of the most notable moments of the awards show was when Broadway veteran Cicely Tyson was announced the winner in the best actress in a play category. Tyson, who took a three-decade break from the stage, made her return in The Trip to Bountiful – a story of an elderly woman returning to her childhood home.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike starring Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce won for best play, while Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? received the Tony for best play revival. Virginia Woolf also received rewards for best actor Tracy Letts and best director Pam MacKinnon.
Matilda the Musical won big on Sunday night, nabbing four Tony Awards, including one for featured actor Gabriel Ebert. Judith Light, who won a Tony for her role in Other Desert Cities last year, took home the featured actress in a play award for her turn in The Assembled Parties. The featured actor in a play award went to two-time Tony nominee Courtney B. Vance for his role in Nora Ephron’s Lucky Guy.
