“We’re very interested in Pete,” said Michael S. Smith, designer, and major Democratic donor. “People are drawn to civility and intelligence in this moment more than ever before.”
Smith has cut checks to several 2020 candidates and also hosted a fundraiser for former Vice President Joe Biden which raised over $750,000.
Democratic politicians have leaned on the entertainment industry in California to serve as an ATM for their political ambitions. Buttigieg seemed to know his way around as he outraised Sen. Kamala Harris in her home state on his way toward collecting $3.8 million there.
Buttigieg was a South Bend, Indiana mayor who rose to fame when he broke out at town hall performances and created viral moments with his biography as a millennial, gay military veteran.
