The Zodiac Killer was a murderer in the ’60s and ’70s in California who has never been caught. And through a strange internet conspiracy, Ted Cruz has found himself being believed by some as the killer, though mostly jokingly.
Memes have been circulating the internet for weeks with comments about the uncanny resemblance between the Presidential hopeful and the famous killer. Some reports say that this stems from a speech that Cruz delivered at the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2013 titled “This is the Zodiac Speaking” but for the most part, NPR confirms, people have the sense that Cruz is creepy, and “they want to point that out, as clearly as they can.”
Last month Psychology Today published an article called, “Why Ted Cruz’s Facial Expression Makes Me Uneasy.” Although the article offered little scientific explanation for the author’s feelings, it concluded that the author, Richard E. Cytowic M.D., was “at a loss to verbalize what unsettles [him].” Maybe this is the public’s way of expressing their ineffable unsettled sentiments.
This doesn’t quite explain the recent findings of the Public Policy Polling in Florida that 10% of people think that Cruz is the Zodiac Killer, and 28% were “unsure.” That is 38% people who truly think that Cruz could be the Zodiac Killer. The Public Policy Polling is a Democratic polling firm. Over 1000 voters were surveyed.
Of course, there is no way that Cruz is the Zodiac Killer as Cruz was born in December 1970, with many of the killings happening before he was even born. Most people know this, but apparently many in Florida do not.
The joking allegations really took off after his successful performance in the Houston debate as he teamed up with Marco Rubio against front-runner, Donald Trump. Since then, Ted Cruz Zodiac Killer has been trending. T-shirts are for sale, and all the proceeds are going to a network of Texas clinics that provide abortions. (Cruz strongly opposes abortion.)
