Three people have been arrested in Argentina in connection to the death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne.
On Oct. 16, police in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reported that Payne fell to his death from the CasaSure Palermo Hotel balcony.
According to a statement by Buenos Aires Security Ministry communications director Pablo Policicchio, the singer “jumped from the balcony of his room.”
He said that police rushed to the scene after getting an urgent call about an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
His autopsy showed cocaine, crack and benzodiazepine – an antidepressant – in his system. It showed the presence of “pink cocaine,” a drug composed of methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA and other substances.
According to a public prosecutor’s office, the people who have been recently arrested include a friend of Payne, a drug dealer and a employee.
“Illicit conduct was discovered from which three people were charged with the crimes of abandonment of a person followed by death, supply and facilitation of narcotics,” a news release translated from Spanish from the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office disclosed on Nov. 7.
The first person, who had been charged with the abandonment of an individual followed by death, accompanied Payne every day during his stay in Buenos Aires and helped him to get narcotics.
The hotel employee “must answer” for giving cocaine to the singer on “two occasions” during his stay at the hotel, according to the statement.
The other drug supplier is accused of giving Payne drugs twice on October 14.
Both had been charged with the crime of supplying narcotics, two acts each.
It is unknown if any of these suspects are currently detained.
Argentina has a two-phase legal process, and preliminary charges are an aspect of an investigatory phase.
At a later point, a judge might decide to discard or modify the charges or to apply official charges, which are viewed as similar to charges as understood in the American legal system.
Prosecutors noted that investigators reviewed more than 800 hours of video footage from security cameras in the hotel and others on public roads for this case and analyzed Payne’s cell phone data. This included his calls, messages and social media accounts.
Argentine authorities revealed that they authorized the delivery of the singer’s body to his father, Geoff Payne, in early November.
The body was flown back to the United Kingdom on Nov. 6.
