Time to pop out the champagne and celebrate the end of 2020, but that New Year’s Eve celebration may not look like it usually does.
In a very 2020 manner, there will be an empty Times Square when the clock strikes midnight next week. The famed ball will still drop in New York City’s most famous tourist attraction, but for the first time since its creation in 1907, there will be no spectators. The entire celebration will be live-streamed online, along with various TV specials, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The most popular New Year’s Eve special is ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Pose’s Billy Porter will host and perform at the event. Jennifer Lopez is set to headline the show with a set in Times Square minutes before the ball drops. Additional performers will include Cyndi Lauper, Jimmie Allen, Nelly, Megan Thee Stallion and Miley Cyrus. Ryan Seacrest and Lucy Hale will co-host in New York with Porter while Ciara will host from Los Angeles.
“2020 has been a trying year for the world and I’m thrilled to have Billy and Lucy join me in ushering in a new year with fresh beginnings,” said Seacrest. “We look forward to making sure it’s a night for everyone to remember.”
More performers are expected to be announced in the coming week.
