2021 Academy Awards Show To Be Held In-Person From Multiple Locations

The April 25, 2021 ceremony of the 93rd Academy Awards will proceed as planned, as the Oscars take additional COVID-19 precautions.

The Academy “is determined to present an Oscars like none other, while prioritizing the public healthy and safety of all those who will participate,” said an Oscars spokesperson. The ceremony will be an “in-person show that our audience wants to see, while adapting to the requirements of the pandemic.” This will be accomplished by broadcasting the show from multiple locations, including their usual venue of the Dolby Theatre. More details will be released in the upcoming weeks.

The move to a multi-location telecast came after the Academy and other major award shows moved their ceremonies to later dates to allow more time for movies to be seen digitally as the pandemic has closed movie theaters indefinitely across the country. The 2021 Oscars eligibility was also extended from the end of 2020 through early 2021, so more people can watch the films from the safety of their homes.

There are already key contenders to be considered for nominations, including Chloe Zhao‘s NomadlandAaron Sorkin‘s The Trial of the Chicago 7David Fincher‘s MankEmerald Fennell‘s Promising Young Woman and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, with talk of Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman receiving acting nominations.

Nomination voting will begin on March 5 and will run through to March 10. Nominations for the 93rd Oscars ceremony will be announced on March 15. The awards will air on ABC on April 25.
