Christmas has officially started at the Rockefeller Center, but it looks like the center’s famous annual Christmas tree isn’t all it’s chopped up to be. The massive tree was donated by Daddy Al’s General Store in Oneonta, New York and looked great at first, but after being chopped down and transported to midtown Manhattan, is now being hailed as the perfect symbol of all that’s gone wrong with 2020.
“Ladies and Gentlemen – the Christmas tree has arrived at Rockefeller Center in NYC,” one Twitter user announced. “Left pic is how it looked when it was cut down. Right pic is how it arrived. Welcome to 2020.”
“Could the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree look any worse? 2020 on brand…” a user tweeted alongside a compilation video of the tree being propped up at the center and subsequently blown apart by the wind, set to the classic Christmas carol “O Christmas Tree.”
“That Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen,” another user writes. “Perfect.”
“This is treeson,” a user replied to the Rockefeller Center’s announcement post.
People have also been affectionately joking that the tree looks like Charlie Brown’s infamously bad Christmas tree.
“Me with the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree,” a tweet captions a photo of Charlie Brown and his tree.
“BE NICE TO THE ROCKEFELLER CENTER CHRISTMAS TREE, IT’S TRYING ITS BEST!” another user captioned an animated clip of Charlie Brown trying to decorate his tree, only for it to fall over.
Even an owl saved from the tree seems to be unhappy with its appearance at the center – “man, does he look irked,” a user commented.
However, there is hope for the tree yet, as the Rockefeller Center has hinted that the tree will get a makeover before Christmas, “extensions” reportedly being part of the deal.
“Wow, you all must look great right after a two-day drive, huh?” the Rockefeller Center official center wrote from the perspective of the tree. “Just wait until I get my lights on! See you on December 2!”
“I was today years old when I found out the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center has branches added to it,” a user tweeted, adding that she had learned that from the Today show. “The tree gets extensions.”
