The annual Razzie – short for Golden Raspberry – Awards were created in 1981 as the anti-Oscars. The awards are given to the “worst” films of the year, and the “winners” for 2017 were announced yesterday.
The winner for worst film was Dinesh D’Souza‘s documentary Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party. The film also won worst director, actor and actress.
“This is absolutely fantastic,” said D’Souza in a video statement. “My audience loves the fact that you hate me. Thank you.”
The superhero blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice picked up a few Razzies as well, including for worst remake, worst screenplay and worst screen combo. Jesse Eisenberg was also singled out as the worst supporting actor for his over-the-top portrayal of Superman baddie Lex Luthor.
Other winners this year included Kristen Wiig, who wasn’t nominated for Ghostbusters, but instead roped in her first Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress in Zoolander No. 2.
The Razzie Redeemer Award, which is given to a past Razzie nominee or winner who has “crossed into more appreciated works in film” went to Mel Gibson for his film Hacksaw Ridge.
