On Saturday’s SAG Awards, the winners ranged in diversity – a marked contrast to the all-white Oscar acting nominees which inspired the hashtag like #OscarsSoWhite. Leonardo DiCaprio, Idris Elba and Brie Larson took home the biggest awards of the night.
Leonardo DiCaprio Wins For Revenant
DiCaprio took home a win for Best Male Actor award for his revenge role in The Revenant. The movie has received multiple Golden Globes, Oscar nominations and praise from critics since its release.
On DiCaprio’s walk towards stage, he was pulled into a hug from Titanic co-star, Kate Winslet. The two have been publicity praising each other for their successes this year. In his acceptance speech, DiCaprio was “truly humbled truly humbled by this because it comes from my fellow actors.”
DiCaprio added, “When I was 15 I was lucky enough to get a film called This Boy’s Life and after that I watched as many films as I could and it gave me a such a respect for this craft. I was in awe of the performances and I was inspired. To any young actors, I encourage you to watch the history of cinema because we stand on the shoulders of giants.
DiCaprio also thanked his parents before ending his speech: “My parents, thank you for listening to an overly ambitions, slightly annoying 13-year-old kid who wanted to go on auditions after school, I would not be here without you.”
Idris Elba Wins For Beast Of No Nations
Idris Elba’s won for his role in Beast Of No Nations after being snubbed for an Oscar nomination. Elba took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.
Elba played a commandant in the brutal film where he is trained to join a group of guerrilla soldiers. In his acceptance speech he thanked the audience “for showing the film some love.” He also commented on the rawness of the movie: “We made a film about real people and real lives.”
After winning for the second time that night for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Mini-series for Luther, the British actor was speechless. “Two awards — I don’t know what to say.”
Brie Larson Wins For Room
Brie Larson won for her role in Room for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.
She credited movies with helping her come out of her shell in her speech. “When I was born I was worried I was unlovable and your movies made me feel less alone and made me feel it was a safe place to explore my creativity,” she said.
