At the 2013 ESPSY Awards ceremony, NBA star Lebron James took home three awards, including the trophy for male athlete of the year after leading the Miami Heat to their second straight NBA championship win.
To earn the title of male athlete of the year, James beat out Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson and Detroit Tiger Miguel Cabrera. James also won in the championship performance and NBA player categories, while the Heat won the best team award. Peterson and Phelps didn’t go home empty handed, winning two awards a piece.
Female athlete of year honors went to tennis pro Serena Williams, who wasn’t able to attend the even due to a tournament in Sweden. Other female athletes in the category were gymnast Gabby Douglas, swimmer Missy Franklin and basketball phenom Brittney Griner. Griner won best female college athlete of the year.
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby won Best NHL player of the year. Floyd Mayweather picked up the trophy for best fighter, while Usain Bolt was honored with the award for Best International Athlete. San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick went home with the ESPY for best breakthrough athlete.
Mad Men actor Jon Hamm hosted the 21st annual sports awards show at the Nokia Theatre. "Ideally if it could be could be entertaining, funny and lighthearted, that would be a plus,” Hamm said before the show. “But the main thing is to celebrate what these incredible people have done."
