Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the featured actors in the official poster for the 66th Festival de Cannes. The image, in which the actors are somewhat intertwined and kissing each other upside down, is adapted from a photo taken from their film A New Kind of Love (1963).

Newman and Woodward starred alongside one another in a number of films, the first of which, The Long Hot Summer (1958), was screened at Cannes in 1958. They were married that same year and stayed together right up to Newman’s death in 2008.

Both actors were extremely successful in the business. Newman was nominated for nine Academy Awards (8 Best Actor, 1 Best Supporting Actor), winning once, for Best Actor in 1986’s The Color of Money, directed by Martin Scorcese. The Color of Money was a sequel to The Hustler, which also starred Newman. For her part, Woodward won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Three Faces of Eve (1958), and was nominated on three other occasions: Rachel, Rachel (1969), Summer Wishes, Winder Dreams (1974) and Mr. and Mrs. Bridge (1991).

The poster art was created by the Bronx agency in Paris, which did all of the graphics for the 2013 Festival. The 2013 Festival de Cannes kicks off on May 15 and will run through May 26. —Hal Sundt
