An 18-year-old man admitted in juvenile court to fatally shooting rapper Pop Smoke in 2020.

The man will serve time in a juvenile facility until he turns 25.

L.A. County Superior Court Judge J. Christopher Smith told the 18-year-old that Pop Smoke, born Bashar Jackson, “lost his life over no good reason.”

A 20-year-old man previously pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and breaking into Jackson’s rental home to steal from him. Smith sentenced him to four years and two months in a juvenile facility.

According to police, Jackson was on a trip to Los Angeles when his rental home was broken into after he posted a photo on Instagram that showed the address of the house. He was in the shower when the men came into his bedroom and shot him in the back three times. Captain Jonathan Tippet believes the suspects to be members of a gang from south Los Angeles.

Corey Walker, 19, and Keandre Rodgers, 18, were the other two men charged with murder.

Tippet stated that Jackson was not believed to be affiliated with the gang.

Jackson blew up by bringing Brooklyn drill into the mainstream. He rose in popularity in 2019 when Nicki Minaj appeared on the remix of his hit song, “Welcome to the Party,” off his debut EP Meet the Woo. His debut album, Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon, was released posthumously in July 2020.
