Andover, N.J. Police arrived at one of the state’s largest nursing homes Monday evening after receiving an anonymous tip of a body in a shed. Authorities found 17 bodies in the morgue of the nursing home, the Andover Subacute and Rehabilitation Center II.
The officers who arrived at the scene believe that the facility was understaffed.
“The staff was clearly overwhelmed and probably short-staffed. The residents were expiring. Why? We’re not sure if it’s from COVID-19 or from other diseases, but we tried our best to ease the burden,” said Andover Police Chief Eric Danielson.
Danielson, among others, helped transfer 13 of the bodies to refrigerator trucks. The 17 bodies discovered were amongst 68 deaths that the center encountered. Twenty-six of those who died had tested positive for COVID-19. Two staff members were among the deceased.
Seventy-six patients and 41 staff members are currently sick with coronavirus.
