When doctors weighed Andrew Jacob Cervantez upon delivering him at the Desert Valley Hospital in San Bernardino County, Calif., on Jan. 16, they learned they had a 15.2-pound baby on their hands.
At over 15 pounds, Cervantez is one of the biggest babies born in the country and likely the biggest baby ever born in the state of California. He also measured at 2-feet long at his birth, reported KTLA.
Making Cervantez’s considerable size even more shocking, is the short frame of his mother. Vanessa Cervantez is just 5’1. “I couldn’t even believe it,” Cervantez told the Victorville Daily Press, referring to the size of her newborn son. “They had to double check because I didn’t believe them; I thought the machine was broken.”
“None of the doctors have ever delivered or heard of a baby being born that big here,” Vanessa Cervantez continued. “My sister’s been doing research and she doesn’t think a baby weighing 15 pounds has ever been born in California.”
Vanessa Cervantez’s two other children were also on the heavier side. Her firstborn son weighed 10 pounds, 10 ounces at birth, and her daughter was 9 pounds, 14 ounces.
While Andrew Jacob Cervantez’s weight at birth is remarkable, he’s far lighter than the heaviest baby ever born on record. That honor goes to the Canadian baby that was born to Anna Bates in 1879. He was 23 pounds, 12 ounces, according to the Guinness World Records.
