A 14-pound baby boy, born in Utah via C-section on May 9, might be the biggest baby born this year in the United States.

The baby, Joel Brandon Jr. or ‘J.J,’ was born to mom Sarah Brandon who had no idea her baby would be so big on arrival. At her last ultrasound, doctors told her that her baby would be on the larger side – at the time they estimated he weighed in at 11 pounds.

“He came out and they put him on the scale and it said 14 pounds even, I was very shocked, to say the least,” Brandon said.

J.J.’s unusual size at birth may be due to Brandon’s Type 1 diabetes, which can lead to a rise in the baby’s glucose levels.

“An interesting effect of insulin, if it’s not taken in a sufficient amount, the glucose remains high, and the baby’s glucose starts to rise. It’s like giving the baby fertilizer and it grows very large,” Dr. Robert Barbieri, who is not directly connected to J.J. or Mrs. Brandon, told reporters.

J.J. spent some time in neonatal intensive care due to repertory problems but has since been given a clean bill of health. And, according to his mother, is a very happy baby. He even wears the same size diapers as his older sisters, 3-year-old twins.

“He’s very calm, content and giggly. He sits with his sisters all day. He only cries if he’s hungry or tired. He’s an awesome little guy, or big guy,” Brandon told ABCNews.com.

If no baby is born in the U.S. weighing more than 14 pounds before the end of the year, J.J. will win the title of largest baby born in 2013 in the U.S. Worldwide, the largest baby born in 2013 (so far) is George King, who was born in England and weighed in at a reported 15 pounds and 7 ounces.
