The Walking Dead, after focusing solely on Rick (Andrew Lincoln) Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) last week, caught up with a number of other former prison inhabitants in Sunday’s “Inmates.”

'The Walking Dead' Recap

Beth’s (Emily Kinney) voice narrates the beginning of the episode as she and Daryl (Norman Reedus) sprint away from the zombie-infested prison. She’s reading a journal entry of hers from the early days at the prison, when they were all filled with optimism. As she speaks of hope, a new life and a new permanent home, in the present, she and Daryl are winded on their backs in a field after barely escaping the prison with their lives.

Beth wants to do what her father would have done, search for more survivors at her own peril. Though Daryl is initially hesitant, he agrees to help her try to pick up some tracks. The tracks lead the new duo nowhere good. Everywhere they look, there’s a zombie feeding frenzy. Thankfully, they don’t recognize any of the bitten, but when Beth spots a child walker, she crumbles into a teary mess, reliving the fall of the prison and her father Hershel’s death.

Baby Judith Is Alive

Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman), Lizzie (Brighton Sharbino), Mika (Kyla Kenedy) and baby Judith have survived the prison infestation as well. The tracks that Daryl and Beth had been following are revealed to have been theirs, as Lizzie is shown stabbing rabbits in a log that the twosome had passed. When Tyreese and the girls hear a noise, they scurry off, finding some grapes along the way. Between Judith’s cries and Mika’s running off at every frightening sound, Tyreese has his hands full.

When Tyreese hands Judith off to Lizzie to try to help some strangers calling for help, the troubled teen nearly smothers her to death to keep her from crying. After failing to save any of the humans, but neutralizing all the walkers, Tyreese turns around to see the once-banished Carol (Melissa McBride) holding Judith and with Lizzie and Mika by her side. He’s thrilled to see her, not knowing that she bears responsibility for Karen and David’s deaths.

Maggie Searches For Glenn

Elsewhere, Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.) are recuperating from their own escape. Ignoring the reservations of the other two, Maggie is determined to search for Glenn (Steven Yeun). Her plan is to follow the bus route, which proves successful. They find the bus. But, all of the bus’ passengers have turned into zombies. To Maggie’s relief, Glenn is not among the dozens. But where is he?

Glenn is back at the prison amidst a swarm of zombies. Fending them off, he heads to the cell he once shared with Maggie, where he gets a surge of determination after seeing a recent snapshot of his wife. Packing up some riot gear and other supplies, he heads into battle, successfully managing to avoid harm. Before he leaves, however, he spots Lilly’s sister Tara (Alanna Masterson). Despite her protests, he helps her escape with him.

Glenn Teams Up With Tara

Tara tells Glenn all about how they were fooled by Brian (aka The Governor) and how Lilly shot him dead – but not before he killed Hershel (Scott Wilson). Learning of Hershel’s death for the first time, Glenn becomes even more focused on finding Maggie. Glenn doesn’t care if Tara was part of the reason the prison fell. For now, he needs her help. Just then, a group of walkers approaches, which causes Glenn to pass out from exhaustion. Tara fends them off until an armored truck shows up and out walks three people – Sgt. Abraham Ford and his two sidekicks Rosita Espinosa and Eugene Porter.
