Jonah Hill hosted this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, which also featured cameos by his Wolf of Wall Street costar Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Cera, who had joined him in cult comedy Superbad.
Hill’s opening monologue addressed the rumors that Hill – who made a name for himself in outrageous comedies – has become obnoxiously big-headed in light of his recent critical successes. After he implies that he’s a more compelling actor that DiCaprio, DiCaprio himself walked out onto the stage to great applause from the audience.
"Jonah, I knew this was going to happen if you got nominated. But you don't have to pretend anymore. You're a real actor now. You should be humble, you should be gracious," DiCaprio lectured. Hill conceded, with his head down, “I was like, acting like a big shot.”
In the first skit after the opening monologue, Hill reprised the 6-year-old Adam Grossman character. With his stepmother Debbie (Vanessa Bayer), he’s out to dinner at Benihana. “I’ll have a Dewar’s and soda,” he asks the waitress. “I’m kidding I’m 6 years old!” After the umpteenth “Adam, please” from Debbie, who doesn’t think the fellow Benihana patrons appreciate his constant chatter, he says, “Uh, this is Benihana. This is a communal table. If they wanted privacy they could have, I don’t know, gone to any other restaurant!”
One of Hill’s best skits was the trailer for a parody of Spike Jonze’s Her – Me. Predictably, the OS had a voice and personality very similar to his own. When an in person rendezvous is arranged, Cera serves as the surrogate for the OS.
Justin Bieber didn’t receive too much attention on Saturday Night Live, which may have been due to the plethora of jokes made during the late night shows this week. SNL seemed to poke as much fun at the apparently fame-hungry MBPD as the 19-year-old singer. "It's the only city in America where NBA players are the best behaved people," Kenan Thompson, as the arresting officer, quipped while hamming it up for the camera.
Bayer and Cecily Strong reprised their ex porn star roles. This time, they were advertising for a Lamborghini Lambortini with catchphrases and selling points that were rife with sexual innuendo. One fit for print: “It’s available in manual or auto-erotic.”
In one of the stranger skits of the show, Thompson, Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah are gangsters looking to make a hit on a rival gang. Distracted by the snow, all Thompson can think about is curling up in an oversized sweater listening to the sounds of Carole King with a mug of hot chocolate. Though Pharoah gets frustrated with all the mushy snow talk, when he leaves a car to pet a rabbit, he gets “hit.”
The couples quiz show skit was probably the weakest SNL skit this weekend, due to the fact that it had one joke and it wasn’t a good one. Essentially, one contestant (Hill) clogged the toilet backstage. “I clogged the toilet,” he tells the viewing audience. “And later in the day I went on top of the clog.”
Hill was at his best for a skit in which he played an awkward employee at the boss’ house for dinner. Trying to impress the boss, his wife and another couple, he keeps saying the wrong thing. To cope, he screams at himself in the bathroom – and is heard by the entire dinner party. "You're blowing it! Cobb salad! It's a freakin' waldorf you idiot!” he shouts. “Your son was right you are a p—y!”
British alternative rock group Bastille was the musical guest this week. They sang their hit anthem “Pompeii” as well as a ballad “Oblivion.”
Melissa McCarthy will take over hosting duties for next weekend's Saturday Night Live.
