Sam Hunt Pleads Guilty to DUI, Resolving 2019 Case

Country music artist Sam Hunt has pleaded guilty to drinking and driving. He was arrested for driving under the influence and having an open container of alcohol in 2019.

Hunt pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges on Aug. 18 in the Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville, Tennessee.

After pleading guilty to drunk driving, Hunt was given a jail sentence of 11 months and 29 days. Hunt will lose driving privileges for a year, and a lock will be placed on his car after this period. Another piece of his plea contained an agreement to attend DUI education and alcohol safety training. This will take place at the DUI Education Centers.

Hunt avoided additional time in jail by pleading guilty. If he did not take the plea, he could have received a sentence of over 2 years. A charge for an open container of alcohol was dropped by the plea as well.

Hunt was first arrested for two DUIs and breaking the state’s open container policy in November 2019. Hunt was found to have a blood alcohol content of .173 on this night, well above the 0.08 limit dictated by law. Assistant State Attorney Seth Colon, who prosecuted Hunt in this case, said the singer was driving on the wrong side of Ellington Parkway around four in the morning. He was pulled over by police soon after and admitted he had drunk alcohol earlier that night. He then consented to and subsequently failed multiple field sobriety tests.

“We’d Uber’d all night, then went back to a friend’s house, had some pizza. I fell asleep on the couch, woke up groggy. I should’ve been more conscious, but I wasn’t. So I take responsibility.” Hunt said of the incident.
