Maejor Ali On 'Lolly,' Justin Bieber, Why He Changed His Name
Maejor Ali, the recording artist, mixtape performer and Grammy-nominated music producer on albums by Justin Bieber, Trey Songz and Monica, has a new single, "Lolly," which features Bieber and rapper Juicy J. "Working with [Justin] is dope because he's such a talent," Ali told Uinterview exclusively. "He can play instruments, he can sing, he can write, rap. He can do pretty much anything."
Ali changed his stage name from Bei Maejor after being inspired by Muhammad Ali's belief in standing firm in his convictions. "He lost his title when he refused to go to [the Vietnam] war and it cost him a lot of money and his title," says Ali. "Anybody that faces losing a lot like that and still stands by what they believe, I think that's heroic. I wanted to take that spirit in my music."
Working with Justin is awesome. Working with him is dope because he's such a talent. He can play instruments, he can sing, he can write, rap, he can do pretty much anything!
I'm always looking for people. I try to bring people from different worlds together, like 'Lolly' has Juicy J and Justin Bieber from two different worlds. Not every song, but I like to collaborate with different people, it makes the music more interesting.
No, not yet.
No, no tattoos. I've just never seen anything that I wanted stamped down.
I never really knew, I just kind of fell into it. I just discovered it and I liked it.
Inspiration comes from everywhere. If you keep your mind open, you can be inspired by anything.
Working with Juicy J is dope. He's so creative and he knows what he wants to do, what sounds he wants, so working with him is pretty easy, too. He knows how he wants to do things. I loved working with him. One thing I'd want people to know is that he's a producer and a sound engineer, so when he records, he's not recording like any other rappers. When he's recording, he's doing something creative. He's edits, he's really doing a lot more than people can see. He's doing a lot more different things than people know, and he's a lot more talented than people think.
I was playing a lot of sports, a lot of basketball. I grew up in Detroit. I got into music around the time I turned 16 or something like that. I didn't expect anything to come from it but it's cool that it did. I'm enjoying it.
I was inspired by the story of Muhammad Ali. At the top of his career, when he won a championship, he was drafted to fight in the Vietnam War. At the time, he didn't support the war for hir personal beliefs. There were a lot of things going on at the time and he didn't want to kill anyone. He lost his title when he refused to go to war and it cost him a lot of money and his title. He was almost in jail and all of that. Anybody that faces losing a lot like that and still stands by what they believe, I think that's heroic. I wanted to take that spirit in my music. I felt like it fit so I took the name 'Ali'.
I'm not sure. When I made a mix tape before, it was for fun. Now things are moving faster, and I'm getting ready to release my next music, so I don't know.
A mystery, a mystery. I don't want to describe it.
