Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Released From Hospital

On Wednesday, 87-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was released from Johns Hopkins Hospital after being treated for a gallbladder infection. The Supreme Court press release stated, “She is doing well and glad to be home.”

Ginsburg was diagnosed with acute cholecystitis, which is also known as a benign gallbladder condition, at the Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. The Supreme Court said that Ginsburg had been suffering form a gallstone that was blocking her cystic duct and causing an infection. Earlier this week, she was hospitalized in Johns Hopkins Hospital due to the condition. Over her recovery, Ginsburg will need to go to Johns Hopkins Hospital again for follow up and outpatient visits and to receive a nonsurgical procedure in order to remove the gallstone.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Health News

In November, Ginsburg was hospitalized at a different time for a high fever and chills. She stayed in the hospital and was treated with antibiotics and fluids until being released. Last December, Ginsburg underwent surgery for lung cancer and had three weeks of radiation for a cancerous tumor in her pancreas. In January, Ginsburg revealed that she is cancer free, making this her fourth time surviving cancer.

At the 2019 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C., in August, Ginsburg expressed how her job in the Supreme Court has helped her through her health struggles. “I love my job. It’s the best and the hardest job that I have ever had. It’s kept me going through four cancer battles,” she said. Instead of concentrating on my aches and pains, I just know that I have to read this set of briefs, go over the draft opinion.”

Also on Wednesday, Ginsburg, along with other Supreme Court justices, held a virtual hearing. Ginsburg participated from her hospital room. The Supreme Court has been holding these virtual hearings due to the coronavirus pandemic.
