Lin Manuel Miranda has announced that the movie production of Hamilton will drop on Disney+ on July 3, almost a year earlier than original release date.
On Good Morning America on May 12, Miranda and Disney’s executive chairman, Bob Iger, made the announcement of pushing up the release date. Originally, Hamilton was set to premiere in theaters on October 15, 2021. Iger said that this change has been made “in light of the extraordinary challenges facing our world,” referring to the coronavirus pandemic.
Disney+ also announced the news on Twitter, “Surprise! The original Broadway production of Hamilton, filmed LIVE onstage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, is now coming exclusively to #DisneyPlus this July 3rd. Shout it to the rooftops! #Hamilfilm”
Miranda praised director of both the Hamilton film and Broadway show, Thomas Kail. “He’s basically given everyone at home the best seat in the house,” Miranda said. “It’s a thrilling experience. He really threads the needle between these cinematic close-ups and widening out and seeing the show from the center aisle of the Richard Rodgers Theatre.”
Igner added, “”In these times, to tell a story of people uniting together against forces of adversity I think is quite relevant and also quite important.”
The Hamilton film itself is categorized as a “live capture” of the musical and features the original cast performing in the theater that the show itself is held, the Richard Rodgers Theater in New York City.
Miranda plays his role as Hamilton, the lead, and the movie will also feature original cast members, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Leslie Odom, Jr., Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onaodowan and Anthony Ramos. Miranda wrote the show, but also played the role of executive producer with Kail and Jeffrey Seller.
