In a four hour interview with Forbes on Tuesday, Kanye West revealed that he no longer supports President Donald Trump and that he is recently recovered form the coronavirus.
In the past, West had been widely criticized for his support of the president, especially in 2018 when he faced significant backlash when he was photographed in the Oval Office wearing a hat that read, “Make America Great Again.”
However, West explained that Trump lost his support when he found out that Trump was hiding in an underground bunker in the White House during racial protests in Washington D.C. West said, “It looks like one big mess to me. I don’t like that I caught wind that he hid in the bunker.”
West’s comments come after he tweeted on July 4 that he was going to be running for president, despite having missed the deadline to be on the ballot in several states. Many speculated that this would be a way to deter young and black votes from voting for probable Democratic candidate Joe Biden and in turn help Trump win a second term in office.
West rejected this theory and responded, “I’m not denying it, I just told you. To say that the black vote is Democratic is a form of racism and white supremacy. I’m not saying Trump’s in my way, he may be a part of my way. And Joe Biden? Like come on man, please.” He added, You know? Obama’s special. Trump’s special. We say Kanye West is special. America needs special people that lead. Bill Clinton? Special. Joe Biden’s not special.”
West said he could get around filing deadlines due to the coronavirus. West explained that he himself contracted the virus in February. He described his experience, “Chills, shaking in the bed, taking hot showers, looking at videos telling me what I’m supposed to do to get over it.”
While it is unclear if West had tested positive for COVID-19, West went on to say that he is praying for a cure, “We pray. We pray for the freedom. It’s all about God. We need to stop doing things that make God mad.”
Earlier this week, West’s shoe company Yeezy, was revealed to have received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan of between $2 and $5 million as part of Trump’s $2 trillion CARES Act designed to help give economic relief to companies which were affected by the coronavirus. Days later, West’s plans to build a multi million dollar home in Wyoming were approved.
