Fred The Godson, the New York City-based rapper, died on Thursday at 35. Fred revealed on his Twitter earlier this month that he had been diagnosed with COVID-19 by posting a picture of himself on a ventilator.
“I’m in here with this [COVID] 19 sh–! Please keep me in y’all prayers!!!!” he wrote in his post.
Fred reportedly had been fighting asthma before being diagnosed with COVID-19.
On Wednesday, his publicist initially said that Fred has been showing some signs of recovery like a reduced fever.
Fred was grieved by many of his fellow artists on social media. Cristion D’oD’or, a fellow New York City-based rapper, posted a tribute on Instagram, saying that he “prayed this was a f—king bad dream.”
Christopher Martin, a reggae singer-songwriter from Jamaica, wrote: ‘”Really hurts to hear [you’re] not here no more my G! Never even got to get [you] on that reggae track cause we kept procrastinating…love [you] bro!!! Rest easy.”
The Bronx native, Fred was a core figure in New York City’s hip hop scene, releasing two mixtapes this year alone. He was also named XXL‘s 2011 Freshman Class, along with other big names like Kendrick Lamar and Mac Miller.
Fred the Godson was survived by his wife, LeeAnn Jemmott, and his two daughters.
