A new vial video posted on June 9, which asks foreigners reveal ways to determine if a person is American, has generated over one million views in just a few days.
The video begins with an interviewer asking the question, “Can you distinguish Americans?” The camera then pans to a pair of Austria guys responding with, “Distinguish Americans from what, like from other people?”
The video continues with the interviewer showing responses from people in Japan, Germany, Indonesia and Lithuania just to name a few countries. Predictably – each person’s response to the first answer of how to distinguish Americans – is by an accent. The next response on the list is weight, in other words, Americans are fat. “Americans eat a lot of hamburgers, so if you see a person with McDonald’s he’s probably American,” a couple of women from Germany noted. But, not everyone agreed with that assessment. A few women from Japan replied with, “I can see that Americans have impressive muscular development… a sexy physique.”
The American stereotypes are piled on throughout the video – Americans like to smoke wherever they want, never carry umbrellas when it rains, say they have no money, always play drinking games and don’t care about what clothes they wear.
The final minute of the video only gets worse. Apparently, Americans are loud when they talk, and can be a bit too jolly. Now what’s wrong with a little happiness in your life? Americans are also confident and outgoing, one subject observes, “If you talk to American people they smell like freedom.” Whatever that means, it sounds pretty good.
