‘SNL’ Mocks Rachel Maddow & MSNBC’s Over-The-Top Trump Coverage
Saturday Night Live took aim at MSNBC this weekend in a skit that satirized the network’s coverage of President-elect Donald Trump and the personalities of its anchors.
The sketch featured Sarah Sherman as Rachel Maddow, who introduced herself by warning viewers, “Dads better hide their older, bookish-looking lesbian daughters.”
The segment parodied MSNBC’s panel discussions, describing the featured analysts as “basically like The Avengers for your aunt.” Cast members portrayed network regulars, including Ari Melber, Joy Reid, Stephanie Ruhle and Chris Hayes, skewering their on-air quirks.
Ego Nwodim, playing Reid, asserted that the network would focus on Trump’s actions rather than his words, saying, “This time around, we’re not gonna get sucked in by every new shiny, crazy statement from Trump.” Moments later, Sherman’s Maddow interrupted with breaking news that Trump allegedly wants to “trade Connecticut for Italy.”
Throughout the skit, panelists were repeatedly interrupted by absurd “breaking news” updates, including a fictitious report claiming Trump told L.A. wildfire victims that “Arnold Palmer had some of the longest balls in American history.” The skit also poked fun at Melber’s love for hip-hop references and Ruhle’s bubbly demeanor.
One of the night’s sharpest jabs came at the expense of Hayes and Maddow, addressing the long-running internet joke about their resemblance.
When Nwodim’s Reid directed a question to Maddow, the camera instead focused on Andrew Dismukes as Hayes, who awkwardly clarified, “Oh, I’m not Rachel, I’m Chris Hayes.”
Trump has long been a frequent target for SNL, despite hosting the show twice, once in 2004 and again in 2015.
