In the next chapter of Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s feud, Drake filed a lawsuit against his parent label, Universal Music Group, for promoting Lamar’s song “Not Like Us,” claiming the song put his life and livelihood in immediate danger.

Drake and Lamar’s very public detest for one another has long been accentuated by diss tracks and unfounded allegations. Lamar’s track “Not Like Us,” released on May 4, 2024, quickly drew more attention than Drake’s diss tracks and resulted in a big target sign being painted on his back.

A central focus of “Not Like Us” is Drake’s history of inappropriate behavior with young women. The song’s hit lyric quickly became, “Why you trolling like a b—- ain’t you tired / trying to strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.” The track’s cover art furthers Lamar’s accusations, showing a Google Maps image of Drake’s house covered in predator map pins.

The lawsuit, filed in New York, details three individual home invasions of Drake’s home in Toronto last spring, one of which saw Graham’s security guard shot. In the 91-page filing, Drake alleges that the break-ins were directly related to the release of Lamar’s “Not Like Us” track, and that UMG knowingly committed defamation of character when they released and promoted the song. The court documents further accuse the song’s lyrics of “[Advancing] the false and malicious narrative that Drake is a pedophile,” and encouraging the public to “resort to vigilante justice in response.”

Notably, the lawsuit made a point to focus on UMG and disregard Lamar, specifying, “UMG may spin this complaint as a rap beef gone legal, but this lawsuit is not about a war of words between artists. This lawsuit involves no claims against Kendrick Lamar or any other artist; instead, it is about UMG — the publisher and exclusive rights holder of Lamar’s music, as well as Drake’s — and its malicious decision to publish and promote [‘Not Like Us’].”
