President-elect Donald Trump praised Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) after they met in Mar-a-Lago.

Trump invited Fetterman to this hour-long meeting, which took place over the weekend and involved discussions of acquiring Greenland, using tariffs to promote U.S. steel, backing Israel and securing the southern border.

Nippon Steel’s effort to purchase U.S. Steel for $15 billion fell apart in early January when President Joe Biden blocked the deal.

Trump and Fetterman were against the deal for national security reasons and were concerned about blue-collar jobs.

“It was a totally fascinating meeting,” the president-elect stated during an interview with the Washington Examiner. “He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, and I couldn’t be more impressed.”

“He’s a commonsense person,” he went on to say. “He’s not liberal or conservative. He’s just a commonsense person, which is beautiful.”

“It’s been amazing, and there’s been cooperation within the Republicans and a lot of the Democrats,” Trump added. “I will say that Sen. Fetterman was very impressive to me, really impressive. He really was impressive, and I’m glad I got to speak to him. And he loves Pennsylvania, and he loves our country.”

The Pennsylvania senator, who distanced himself from the “progressive” label he once accepted in June 2024, had been the first sitting Democratic senator to visit Trump at Mar-a-Lago since his electoral victory in November 2024.

Fetterman joked to reporters that he would accept the president-elect’s invitation to meet because he wanted to become “Pope of Greenland,” alluding to Trump’s interest in annexing the Danish territory.

The senator also rejected the criticisms of his decision to sit down with Trump.

“I think it’s pretty reasonable that if the president would like to have a conversation – or invite someone to have a conversation – to have it,” he told CBS News. “And no one is my gatekeeper.”
