Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) promised that she would introduce a legislation that would change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”

During a Mar-a-Lago press conference on Jan. 7, President-elect Donald Trump stated that he plans to give the Gulf of Mexico this new name.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” Trump stated during the press conference. That covers a lot of territory,” he added.

“The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name,” he declared. “And it’s appropriate – it’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

On Tuesday, Greene announced on Truth Social that she would be introducing the new legislation to make the name change official.

“President @realDonaldTrump’s second term is off to a GREAT start,” the Georgia congresswoman claimed in a Truth Social post.

“I’ll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America,” she announced.

“I’ve directed my staff to immediately begin drafting legislation to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” she revealed on X on Tuesday. “This is important to begin funding the changing of maps for all agencies within the federal government, like the FAA and the military.”

Greene also mentioned in a statement that “the American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted.”

“Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries,” she went on to say. “It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as.”

In July 2024, Greene was criticized on social media after she blamed Democrats for Trump’s attempted assassination.

In late September 2024, the congresswoman told former Rep. Dave Brat (R-Virginia) during an appearance on Steve Bannon’s War Room that House Speaker Mike Johnson no longer has the respect of House GOP members.
