Kanye West Covers Face With A Mask While Insulting Lawyer During Deposition Video: ‘You Don’t Have The Right To See My Face!’
Kanye West covered his face while slamming a lawyer in newly released footage from his deposition for a $10 million lawsuit accusing him of stealing from MyChannel Inc. in 2020.
In a sneak peek for A&E’s Interrogation Raw: Celebrity Under Oath, which shows footage of the deposition from June 3, 2021, West appeared on a Zoom call and blocked his eyes with a “Rooted in Ignorance” cap.
“I see that you’re looking down at, probably, a device,” MyChannel, Inc.’s attorney, Michael Popok, said during the call. “Are you on your phone?”
“Yes,” the rapper responded.
“OK, I’m going to ask as a ground rule that you not be on your phone during the exam,” Popok stated. “Can we agree to that?”
“Well, is that legally what it should be,” West asked.
“I’m – I’m not going to advise you as to the law, that’s why your lawyers are here, but that is my ground rule for the deposition consistent with California law that you need to be present – focused on the examination and not on a device,” the tech firm’s attorney declared.
“Due to my mental genius-ness, to focus on this bulls–, I need to be on a phone,” West stated.
When his attorney, Ekwan Rhowe, urged him to get off his phone, he agreed before putting on a perforated hood emblazoned with an image of Jesus Christ.
“Mr. West, why have you dawned a mask to start this deposition,” Popok asked the rapper.
“Because you don’t have the right to see my face,” West claimed.
“And is it your intention to wear that mask for the entire duration of your examination,” the lawyer then wondered.
“Perhaps,” West replied.
In a second clip, Popok asked the rapper where he was giving the deposition.
“I’m not going to tell you,” he shouted. “You’re never gonna see me again!”
The lawyer asked West if anybody was “in the room with” him.
“No one’s in this actual room with me,” the rapper responded.
“OK, and what other things do you have in the room besides the phone that you’ve identified,” Popok asked.
“Are you stupid,” West stated. “I’m not going to tell you the other things – I don’t have the time to be talking about – I got a chair in the room.”
“You’re talking to – you are talking to the richest black person in the history of America,” he claimed.
West has been plagued by lawsuits in the last year. A federal lawsuit filed in late November alleged that West choked and gagged America’s Next Top Model alumna Jenn An during a 2010 music video shoot until she lost consciousness.
Two weeks ago, the rapper hired new legal counsel during his $2 million case with The Gap, in which they were accused of making various unlawful changes to a store selling a Yeezy clothing line.
The Gap declared that it was unable to schedule a deposition with West.
