Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly helped tank Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-New York) bid to serve as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.

Pelosi, who stepped down as Democratic House leader in November 2022, pushed for Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Virginia) to win the high-ranking role and “actively worked to tank” Ocasio-Cortez’s bid while “making calls” on behalf of Connolly, Punchbowl News reported.

The report said that Pelosi’s behind-the-scenes maneuvering shows the sheer “amount of political capital” she’s willing to put into Connolly’s campaign.

Two House Democrats with direct knowledge of Pelosi’s outreach told Axios that she reached out to members, urging them to support Connolly instead of Ocasio-Cortez.

These two faced off to replace current Oversight Committee ranking member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland).

“Many members are concerned about [the] precedent these races are setting,” one senior House Democrat said to Axios.

One House Democrat familiar with Ocasio-Cortez’s whip count mentioned that she “has pretty much the entire [Oversight] Committee with her.”

Connelly ended up defeating AOC for the position.

Earlier this year, Pelosi received backlash for suggesting on CNN that protests against the U.S. government’s support of Israel are connected to Russian disinformation campaigns.

Pelosi is widely credited with working behind the scenes to force President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.
