Last Friday, Jose Mateus Correia Silva, an accomplished bodybuilder, passed away from a heart attack while he was doing a punishing training session at the gym.

Silva, 28, fell ill while working out with friends at the Aguas Claras gym in Brazil, near the capital Brasilia. A friend rushed him to a nearby fire station to save him, but his attempts to revive Silva were not successful.

The cause of his heart attack has not been made clear.

Silva finished ninth in the Men’s Physique Class in the 2018 South American Championships. He had placed eleventh the year before in the Men’s Bodybuilding class.

Although he was not participating in competitions at the time of his death, Silva was still a highly dedicated athlete with a rigorous training schedule, known to train other bodybuilders for competitions. He also had his own online supplements store. Although he had not yet explored other careers before his untimely death, Silva was qualified to be a lawyer and had completed a nutrition course in the past.

In a tribute post to social media, Silva’s brother, Tiago, shared a picture of the athlete, accompanied by the caption, “You were incredible. Thank you for so much. I love you.”

He wrote, “Heaven has gained an angel. Jose was a much-beloved man.”

Silva’s funeral, held two days after his death, was attended by hundreds of mourners who overflowed the venue.

A number of Silva’s Instagram posts have been removed since he died, but older pictures show him proudly displaying his medals from competitions.

Many have speculated on a link between Silva’s death and the use of anabolic steroids. An 11-year observational study published in March of this year found there to be a three times greater risk of death in steroid users than in nonsteroid users.
