Initially called the Macy’s Christmas Parade, intended to kick off the holiday shopping season, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was first held in 1924. The name was changed in 1927 to permanently shift the Parade’s annual date to Thanksgiving. The three-hour parade, which takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., has been nationally televised on NBC since 1953.
The first few years of the parade saw handlers march animals from the Central Park Zoo, but when this scared children, the spectacle was replaced by oversized balloons. These balloons, which take up about 12,000 cubic feet of helium when filled, make Macy’s the second largest consumer of helium in the world, only following the government.
From 1927 to 1932, handlers were expected to release the balloons at the end of the parade. This was followed by a race to find the fallen balloons, which were printed with a return address. If the balloons were returned, people received a $100 gift card to Macy’s.
