Amid Bitter Divorce & Conflict Over Kids, Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie Head To Court In $67 Million Lawsuit Over Winery
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s longstanding legal battle surrounding their shared winery is headed to go to court.
In 2014, Jolie and Pitt bought the Château Miraval in France and its surrounding vineyards in 2012. The couple finalized their divorce in 2016, but the property has remained a point of contention between the two.
Previously equally owned by the couple, Jolie sold her share of the Château Miraval in 2021 to Russian businessman Yuri Shefler. In response, in 2022, Pitt served Jolie with a $67 million lawsuit, claiming Jolie made the sale without his permission, as was required by a verbal agreement the two had.
Jolie has since filed multiple motions to dismiss the suit, but with her latest request dismissed by Superior Court Judge Lia Martin, it appears that Jolie and Pitt will have to settle the matter in court. A trial date is yet to be scheduled, but the court will decide whether or not Jolie has to reverse her deal with Shefler.
Jolie has argued that her and Pitt’s verbal agreement on the winery had been nullified when she signed Pitt’s NDA regarding their marriage. However, court filings submitted last week see Martin suggest Pitt’s claim he and Jolie have had a binding verbal agreement that Jolie violated might have some grounds.
Jolie has been accused of holding the winery over Pitt’s head in retaliation for her frustration that he was awarded joint custody of their six children when the couple divorced. Since 2016, Pitt’s team has frequently accused Jolie of trying to drive a wedge between her children and their father. Several of their kids dropped Pitt’s last name this year.
Pitt has been successful in many stages of the winery legal battle as of late, with a key judgment in Luxembourg determining him to be in control of the estate until further hearings. In March, the LA Superior Court rejected Jolie’s allegations that Pitt’s suit was “frivolous, malicious and part of a problematic pattern.”
Jolie and Pitt’s legal help through the dispute has cost each millions of dollars. Jolie recently begged her ex to drop the suit.
