GOP presidential hopeful Nikki Haley says that if she is elected president, she will pardon former President Donald Trump.

During a New Hampshire campaign event last week, Haley was asked by a 9-year-old boy if she would be in favor of pardoning the former president.

“I would pardon Trump,” Haley said in response.

“If he is found guilty, a leader needs to think about what’s in the best interest of the country,” she explained. “What’s in the best interest of the country is not to have an 80-year-old man sitting in jail that continues to divide our country.”

“What’s in the best interest of the country would be to pardon him so that we can move on as a country and no longer talk about him,” she concluded.

Trump is currently facing 91 felony charges across three states: Florida, New York and Georgia. Some of the charges filed against the former president carry prison terms of a maximum of 20 years.

This is not the only controversial comment that Haley has spoken in the last two weeks. Last week, Haley faced backlash for not mentioning slavery in her response to a question about the Civil War.

Last week, the Maine secretary of state removed Trump from the ballot for “supporting an insurrection” on January 6, 2021.
