Derek Chauvin, the former Minnesota police officer who was convicted of murdering George Floyd in 2020, was seriously injured after being stabbed in federal prison on Saturday.

Chauvin was attacked around 12:30 p.m. at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona. His attacker has not been identified. According to the report, prison employees performed “life-saving” measures before Chauvin was hospitalized.

“I’m sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence,” Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D) said in a statement. “He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence.”

Chauvin is currently serving 22.5 years in prison. The violence against him comes just one week after the U.S. Supreme Court denied Chauvin’s appeal of his second-degree murder conviction, as the former police officer claimed that new evidence proved that he did not cause Floyd’s death.
