Texas Teenager Dies After Completing 5K Cross-Country Race With His Best Time Ever
After completing a cross-country race, a Texas teenager, Angel Hernandez, died just after crossing the finish line.
Hernandez, a sophomore at Chisholm Trail High School in Fort Worth, had just run his best 5K time at a cross country meet when he collapsed suddenly.
A group of friends then helped Hernandez to a nearby water station, but he then collapsed again.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died an hour later.
It is unknown why Hernandez collapsed at the meet. His cause of death is currently under investigation.
His family has established a GoFundMe page to help with the funeral costs.
In his honor, Hernandez was named athlete of the week at his high school.
“He worked hard and was an amazing teammate. We lost Angel at the District XC Meet, and words cannot express our feelings for him and his family. Thank you, Angel, for all your hard work and determination. You will be extremely missed,” Hernandez’s coach, Jose Gifford, wrote about him on social media.
In addition to cross country, Hernandez also practiced karate.
Hernandez’s funeral took place on Friday, while the school had a moment of silence in his honor at a football game.
