MORGAN HARPER NICHOLS BIOGRAPHY: CAREER
In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Nichols revealed how she first got started with music and poetry.
“Yeah, I come from a very musical family, a very creative family, and that honestly is what started it,” Nichols stated. “I was also a preacher’s kid of a small church, which, that’s just one of those things where you, by default, end up having to be involved. I started out a little bit reluctantly, a little bit like okay, this is just something my family does. You know, my parents are musicians, my mom’s an artist. I was like this is just something we do, but I didn’t really see it as something that I would take on as a career until I was out of college. I had my first job. I was really happy with it, but the job was moving to a different part of the state. I couldn’t move with it, and my sister, who was a full-time musician at the time, was traveling, doing music, and I just literally went on the road with her. She’s two years younger than me and significantly more extroverted and high energy, and I just followed her around,” Nichols chuckled. “And from there, that’s what actually led me to getting a songwriting deal, getting a record deal. And then eventually, I left that space to pursue digital art and poetry out of, honestly, it was needing more income and wanting to be more creative. And that’s what led me into the space that I’m in today.”
Nichols discussed what it was like to become diagnosed with autism as an adult and how it affected her throughout her life.
“So, growing up, my parents thought it couldn’t be possible that I was on the spectrum. However, when you study about autism, you find that it’s very hard for girls and women to get diagnosed. And that was even more difficult in the 90s when I was growing up,” Nichols recalled. “And it’s also true for people of color. So, I was definitely in the category of people that don’t typically look like what someone would expect an autistic person to look like. So, as a result, I just traveled throughout my whole life dealing with sensory issues, dealing with communication challenges and things, and never really being able to make sense of it. And then when I was 27, I kind of started to realize like, wait, I’m like a real adult now. I’m almost 30. I feel like something’s not clicking. So, I went to my primary care doctor at the time, and I told him years ago my family thought that maybe there could be a possibility that I was, you know, on the autism spectrum. And before I could even get the question out, he was just like, ‘Oh, you’re perfectly normal. There’s nothing to worry about.’ Sadly, I took his word and just walked out of that doctor’s office. For several years, I just continued to struggle and doubt myself,” Nichols confessed. “Then, it was during the lockdowns last year, during the pandemic, where I was on TikTok, and TikTok showed me some videos of some women who have been diagnosed as adults. And it was just like everything clicked and I was like, wow, they’re explaining my whole life experience.”
When asked about her book, How Far You Have Come: Musings On Beauty And Courage, Nichols revealed the message that she would like her readers to take away.
“It’s my hope that through the art and poetry, that it just kind of gives the reader an invitation to slowly, maybe look through your own phone’s camera roll and find photos that are symbolic of just the beauty and courage in your own life.”
