Jeffrey Epstein Was Give Special Treatment In Prison That Facilitated His Suicide, Justice Department Report Finds 

The staff of the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) is to blame for allowing the death of Jeffrey Epstein to occur, according to a federal investigation.

In a report by the Department of Justice (DOJ), it was found that the MCC staff did not properly supervise Epstein and even gave him special treatment. This included allowing Epstein access to an ​​unrecorded phone call, which occurred the night before his death. 

Epstein was in prison in 2019 while he was waiting for his trial to begin. He was accused of federal sex trafficking and sexually abusing young women. 

The prison acted carelessly and committed “significant misconduct” by ignoring laws and regulations that were set in place to avoid an incident like this. 

It was crucial that Epstein was properly monitored as he was one of the highest-profile inmates within the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP). 

Michael E. Horowitz, the DOJ Inspector General, released a statement about the investigation. He reported that the multitude of misconduct allowed Epstein to commit suicide while at the facility. 

According to BOP policy, the Special Housing Unit (SHU), where Epstein was being held before his death, is required to supervise and observe all inmates. The staff failed to do this and if they had they would have discovered that Epstein was given excess clothing, blankets and linens. Had they removed these articles, Epstein would not have been able to kill himself, as it was found that he utilized the various linens he was given to create a noose.

The staff attempted to cover up their actions by falsifying round sheets and count sheets that stated that they supervised Epstein, when in fact he was not observed for hours before his death.

The two employees, Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, were charged with criminal charges, but they were later dismissed.

After Epstein was placed on suicide watch, the staff was notified that he required a new cellmate by the MCC New York Psychology Department. Epstein’s original cellmate was transferred to another cell, but the MCC New York staff did not assign him a new one, despite being aware of the Psychology Department’s notice. 

In addition to this, MCC workers did not properly oversee the functionality of the security cameras. Had they done this, they would have found out that the cameras in fact were not working, which they then could’ve repaired. Instead, this allowed Epstein to commit suicide without drawing attention to himself. 

The FBI conducted its own investigation into Epstein’s death which looked to determine if any non-BOP involved persons committed criminal activity in helping Epstein. They determined that Epstein’s death was not a result of any criminal act. 

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) found that the staff was to blame and his death was a result of misconduct but did not contradict the FBI’s findings. 

The OIG concluded that had Epstein been properly monitored by the staff, they would have discovered that he was given far too many linens, was alone and unmonitored for a long period of time and his death could have been prevented. 

The prison has been closed since 2021 when the Justice Department ordered it to make improvements to its conditions.
