Crystal Smith, who was scheduled to face trial on Monday for allegedly tampering with evidence after her son killed a 13-year-old classmate, is now scheduled to plead guilty in St. Johns County Circuit Court in Florida.

This comes almost two years after her son Aiden Fucci, then 14, killed cheerleader Tristyn Bailey. He stabbed Bailey 114 times and left her dead in the woods.

Fucci pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in February. In March, he was sentenced to life in prison.

During the court proceedings, Smith submitted letters to the judge and the Bailey family.

“I grieve for the devastating loss of Tristyn, I grieve for the subsequent arrest of my son, and I grieve for the irreparable agony inflicted on the Bailey family, as well as all other friends and families affected,” she wrote. “Most of all, however, I grieve for Stacy Bailey as a mother.”

Home security video showed that Smith scrubbed a pair of jeans that Fucci had worn the night he killed Bailey. She cleaned the jeans in a bathroom sink after police had visited her home to question Fucci.

Forensics found that the jeans and sink drain tested positive for blood.

Smith faces up to five years in prison for committing a third-degree felony.
