James McAvoy Confirms Marriage To Lisa Liberati

James McAvoy, 42, has revealed that he privately married his fiance Lisa Liberati. 

It was first reported in 2019 that McAvoy had married Liberati, who was the personal assistant to Split director M. Night Shyamalan during filming in her hometown of Philadelphia, but McAvoy has never publically addressed the rumors.

McAvoy was previously married to Sex Education actress Anne-Marie Duff, with whom he shares 11-year old son Brendan. The couple met on Shameless and split in 2016 after being married in 2006. 

The following year, he addressed the breakup while speaking with Mr. Porter, saying, “Me and Anne-Marie, when we were together, it was our policy not to speak about each other in public. We rarely broke that, and if we did, it was for tiny things – ‘Yes, we are cooking turkey this Christmas’ – and that policy still stands.” He added, “Even separated, we’re still respectful of each other and committed to doing that publicly and personally,” while admitting that “things are really good” for him.

Months after the divorce was finalized, McAvoy and Liberati made their romance Instagram official by sharing several pictures of themselves at a costume party. 

“It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision of divorce,” McAvoy and Duff said in a joint statement at the time. “We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love, and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son.”

McAvoy said he declined to comment on his relationship with Liberati for “fear of creating tabloid fodder.”
