Monday Night’s Moon Will Be Both A ‘Pink Moon’ & A Supermoon

The next full moon on Monday, April 26 will be a pink moon, but it probably won’t look pink.

The name Pink Moon comes from Native Americans who named April’s full moon after the time of year when pink wildflowers would bloom, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

“April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America,” The Old Farmer’s Almanac reported. “Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name ‘moss pink.’”

The moon may appear pink due to clouds or pollution, but the color ultimately depends on the atmospheric conditions.

According to NASA, Monday’s moon will also be a supermoon, one of two supermoons that will happen in 2021. Supermoons occur when the moon is very close to the Earth.

“What has caught the public’s attention in recent decades are full supermoons, as these are the biggest and brightest full Moons for the year,” according to NASA.
